I think the worst thing about it is the lack of purpose built points to attach your safety harness to. Just cliping onto a bolt that is screwed into a small welded socket on the pipe you are climbing up seems to a bit minimal. Its a case of the guys who design these things doing it as cheap as possible and not really taking into account that someone has to change the light bulb every now and then. Its pretty typical of a whole load of things that people design; they never take into account how to maintain them, I know having worked in engineering maintenance for the thick end of 40 years.
I agree with Daedalus - just clipping onto to a three quarter inch bolt is pretty useless. If he did slip there's every chance it could jump off the end.......
And who does the safety checking of all the steps, and attachments??

I think that the local Health and Safety officers (cunts) should be made to visit every work place in all of the locations that he/she has responsibility for, to assess the risk situation in order that they can give a comprehensive assessment of the H&E requirements in any given location. When I see a report from one of the wankers pertaining to a site like the one in the video, I might just start taking them seriously and have a modicum of respect for them. In the event that they are not able/prepared to do that, I fail to see how they can enforce any H&S rules, fines etc. on anyone.
I really couldn't keep my eyes on this the whle way through. How is it even possible? And climbing back down! Why don't they put all the bits requiring maintenance at a more accessible height? Use fibre optics instead of light bulbs kind of thing!
This vid evoked in me one of the most powerful emotional responses I have ever experienced from simply watching a screen.
Nausea was the main thing with me and a distinct feeling of fear/doom.......what someone with an anxiety disorder has the horror of but WITHOUT a clear precipitant. Poor sods!

Not just me, then. I get this irrational fear that I will jump off and not be able to stop myself, almost like watching myself from a distance. Mind you, that video did me good. I was clearing gutters today, probably six feet off the ground, and I wasn't shitting myself at all.
What gets me about our experience of reality is that it is simply made up of tens of thousands of little inputs from a variety of stimuli reaching us. If any goes a little awry, then we are either brave or cowardly, healthy or ill,wise or stupis. Some of us get a lot of one type or the other!
