Banning knives ...

... that's really worked, hasn't it?

A warm late summer afternoon on a leafy street in an area colonised by fashionable cafes and shops came to an abrupt end when the peace was shattered by a raw, terrifying eruption of gang violence this week.

Armed with spades, screwdrivers, bars and sticks, two gangs clashed and sent locals fleeing into shops for safety.

As I have said elsewhere: knives are just tools. Ban them and "decent, hard-working folks" are deprived of the right to carry a tool. Thugs will just move on to the next weapon or ignore the law.

What's coming next? A ban on carrying concealed screwdrivers?

You need only watch one of the myriad "police: ACTION!"-type shows on ITV2 (I only do this when there really is bugger-all else on) to know that in practice any pointy object you are seen carrying is cause for the police to stop you.

Mind you I'd be a little wary of a pissed up welshman carrying around a 6 inch philips-head at 2am in the morning as well.

Best bit is "The fracas lasted around 20 minutes..."

Yet no police turned up?

You know what is happening next Obo. It has already been trialled by the Police in Torquay this summer.

"A yellow curfew is in effect. This is for YOUR protection"

Apparently two of them were armed with Wellington boots as well.

What about Biros? You could easily kill somebody with a Biro if you were trained in that sort of thing.

Mark,

So you saw the Bourne Identity this weekend on ITV2-4 as well then?

Too true, when it comes to making something into a weapon you can use anything heavy, sharp, sore when it gets in your eyes, the list goes on and on.

This amnesty on knives is bollocks. There should be more power to beat the shite out of people who do these things.
