Seconds out, round number one!

That didn't take long, did it?

President Dmitry Medvedev said today that Russia will deploy missiles in territory near Nato member Poland in response to US missile defense plans.

He did not say whether the short-range Iskander missiles would be fitted with nuclear warheads.

My guess is that this will happen soon after Barry Boy moves into 1600 Pennsylvania.

Watcha gonna do, Baz? Iz he worf it?

Are you suggesting that there should be one rule for 'us', and another for the dreaded Red hordes? Tsk.

This is probably the 'momentous decision' that Zbigniew Brezinski warned Obama would have to take early in his presidency. I doubt very much that something like this has completely escaped the attention of US intelligence over the last few months.

I wouldn't worry, this is just the Russians getting their wish list in early. Can't blame them.

We all know Obama is going to cancel the missile project and instead plant a nice line of Lylandia hedges... not only are they a sound green alternative but if you let 'em grow a bit they'll keep any terrorist nukes out too.

There, sorted... next?

I think it unlikely that Russia will actually attack Poland in any way.

What in Poland or in the rest of the EU such a wild toss of the dice?

But the day, probably hour, Obama takes office Russia will have Georgia.

Not that it matters much in world power balances. Georgia cannot be defended. And trying would be disasterous.

US determination to put missile defenses in Eastern Europe was a bad idea from the start. Only arrogance would explain it.

Anon @ 0152: Anyone would think the Americans were proposing to put in a strategic defence line of hundreds of nuclear weapons.

It's 10 (count them) ground-to-air interceptors. It's at least plausible that the reason is to protect against an Iranian nuke since (a) they have the prototype delivery capability and (b) they're working on the warheads and (c) MadBastardinajad has said he'll wipe Israel off the map and (d) his delivery system can certainly reach Eastern Europe and some of Western Europe too.

If the Yanks wanted to spy on / irritate Russia I'm sure they could find a much better way of using several billion dollars to do it.

This is just the Russians acting like they're 16 years old and determined to have a good sulk about something unimportant - because now they've got money and power again, they like the feeling.

Payback, you might say.
