American political thought experiment

What a great idea:

When deciding who to vote for, you should try to imagine that the country has been invaded and the streets are teeming with Nazis, Communists, aliens or some other uncongenial presence. Can you picture your PM or president among the last line of resistance, gun in hand, fighting to the bitter end?

Well, I can’t picture Obama doing that. For one thing, his neck is just too thin. More importantly, in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 atrocities, Obama urged Americans to “[understand] the sources of such madness” and the “fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers” – both of which, he maintained, had nothing at all to do with any particular religion and how it is taught, but instead “grows out of a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair.”

I can, however, picture McCain and Palin leaning out of a White House window wielding automatic firearms. And, improbable as that scenario may be, I think the ability to picture it matters.

OK, now think about Gorgon Brownshirt. Bet you're pissing yourself, aren't you?

He's invited the whole lot in. He'd be - nay, IS - the head Quisling, appearing on TV every day to announce the new emergency measures for the benefit of ALL.

I expect this is a lot like the way many US voters do see things.

Unfortunately, in the modern world it is not a good way of going about dealing with conflict with other powers.

The thought of tempestuous McCain or End-times Palin in charge of the US nuclear arsenal is a terrifying one.

@Ian_QT: I think everyone's forgotten that Mr McCain has actually been on the receiving end of the nastiness of war. I can't think of anyone I'd rather have making that decision, given his up close and personal experience of the consequences of someone else's decision to go to war.

I think he'd call them "our benefactorssss"

Ian, I think you'll find that Palin's religious views are fairly unalarming. Our press often only represents the left-wing perspective and the Democrats just make shit up.

"..leaning out of a White House window wielding automatic firearms..."

Well, OK, but it's a bit feeble.

I'd expect them, at the very least, to be able to give a rousing speech, before hopping into the cockpit of a fighter jet..

@obnoxio: He certainly doesn't give that impression when he speaks. Remember "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"?

@eu007: Well, one man's "fairly unalarming" is another's "terrifying" I guess (I'll post about it in the fullness of time).

Who get to decide who is covered by the term "uncongenial presence"?By the time it comes to the streets being invaded I'm pretty sure Gordo will be up in #10's window opening fire on a whole lot of us...

Obo,

I think everyone's forgotten that Mr McCain has actually been on the receiving end of the nastiness of war.

I particularly like The Onion's take on his political views in their "War for the Whitehouse Segment": Thoughts On Torture:
Doesn't support stuff he couldn't handle

A cheap shot but funny none the less.
