My insider tells me that this this particular delight was due to slavish adherence to corporate standards, rather than thinking about how people actually use the stuff.
It's also pretty remarkable, I've been using the stuff for a quarter of a century and I don't recall any similar cockup.

I considered it a badge of honour that my products were the easiest to install and upgrade, regardless of their actual complexity.
The mark of a good product is the ease of install and upgrade.
