You could level much the same accusation at modern Britain as a whole.
Once,standing at a bus stop in London an elderly lady stood beside me.We made polite small talk about the weather,zimmer frames,whatever."Where are you from?" I asked."Peterborough". "Oh,thats nice" I said or something suitably anodyne."Nah luv its a facking shithole".Then the bus arrived.

Peterborough actually has some redeeming features, which is more than can be said for Harlow, for example.

Without a doubt, Peterborough is an utter shit hole. There are no redeeming features at all, apart from John Lewis.
Newton Abbot is marginally worse, but much smaller.
