You weren't paying attention. Apparently it takes a few days to get the protons up to speed and flying in the right direction - the actual collisions will happen in a few days.
Do you really, really think they didn't test this before? :o)
We scientists never test anything before trying it out.It would take all the fun out of it.The last words ever spoken on this planet will be 'Okay. Let's see what happens if we add this stuff.'(cackle)
